What to Consider When Buying a Home with Children
Buying a home can be a complex process, and adding children’s needs into the mix makes it even more so. It’s not just about you anymore; you also need to consider your children’s needs and wants. Here’s how to make the best decision for your family.
Kids Love to be Included
It’s a good idea to involve and engage your children in your house hunt, but perhaps wait until you’ve narrowed down your search. Involving your kids will make the process more exciting for them and can ease the transition, especially if they have emotional ties to your current home.
What Size House & Layout Do You Need?
Every family (and budget) has different requirements. More than likely, you’ll appreciate ample storage space for toys, linen, sports equipment, etc. If you have young children, you might want a separate playroom where they can make a mess and be noisy.
For older children or teenagers, you may want areas where they (or you) can have some space. Children grow up fast, so consider houses that are large enough to accommodate future needs. The layout is just as important as size. For example, do you have small children who want to sleep close to your bedroom, or do you need a downstairs area where teenagers can be teenagers?
The number of bedrooms and bathrooms is crucial when purchasing a family home. Are you okay with sharing a bathroom with teens? Do you need a spare room or bathroom for extended family to stay over? Do you need a large kitchen and eating area?
Research the Neighbourhood
Is the neighbourhood one you want to raise a family in? Some neighbourhoods are better suited for families. Do other families similar to yours live there? Will your children find friends to play with? Is it a safe neighbourhood?
Location, Location, Location
Location is always top of mind with any home purchase, and it becomes even more important when children are involved. Proximity to the school your child will attend is often the first priority when looking for a family home. Certain school catchment areas may be crucial, so research school districts before you begin your search to keep your house-hunting focused.
If you have a young family with pets, you may want to avoid busy roads and look for a home on a quiet street or even a cul-de-sac. Proximity to parks and green spaces might also be important. Do you want to walk to shops and restaurants, or are you okay with a short drive?
There’s no right or wrong; it’s about what’s right for you and your family.
Home Safety
Is the home you’re looking at child-friendly, or can it easily become child-friendly? Consider potential hazards such as dangerous stairs, busy roads, and yard safety. Is there a pool? If so, is it safe? There are many safety factors to consider when looking for a family home.
